I’ve playing this week with The Magic Words, by Joseph Fasano, a new book of fill-in-the-blanks style prompts to help anyone tap into their inner poet. For this poem, I played with Fasano’s prompt “Change”, unearthing an expression of something I really needed to say out loud, to myself, for myself.
TAG, I’M IT
I am finished being frozen in place
I am finished waiting in limbo for life to begin (again)
I am finished not living for myself
all I want is to be fully present in my own life the way
each heartbeat
each inhale
each exhale
is here one moment and gone the next
completely life-sustaining, life-renewing
moment by
moment by
moment
the way life was when I was a child
unburdened by a past not yet accumulated
unaware of the need to fear a future
I am not a child but I can still choose to
live
with childlike abandon
kicking the can of “what ifs” to the curb
shouting Red Rover, Red Rover
inviting life to come over
tagging myself It
unfrozen
free to run
wild

For years now, through my Exquisite Collaboration Project, I’ve been inviting people - whether they consider themselves writers or poets - to join me in community poetry writing. It’s a simple process where participants from anywhere in the world contribute a line or sentence in response to a prompt. All of the contributions are combined to form a piece of poetry or prose. You can learn more here.
I’d love to help you connect with your inner artist. You can learn more about my workshops and events on my website.

This is pitch perfect for ME. Are you an interior twin? Lovely, and so resonant.
This speaks to me so hard.
Thanks for letting your muse speak to and through you.
